He is a Spanish politician and historian. Since 2020 he has served as Secretary of State for Democratic Memory of the Government of Spain, a position he had previously held with the rank of Director General between 2018 and 2019.
Martínez has been coordinator of the Andalusian Trench Map and mayor of Almería between 1991 and 1995, and was also briefly Senator for Almería, occupying the First Secretary of the Senate Table in the XIII legislature.
Martínez López is a specialist in issues related to Historical Memory. He has been coordinator of the Andalusian Trench Map and coordinator and main researcher of the research projects of Andalusian universities related to the actions of the Courts of Political Responsibility in Andalusia (1936-1945) and the Francoist repression of Andalusian freemasonry and exile Andalusian Republican of 1939. On January 17, 2020, he was appointed Secretary of State for Democratic Memory of the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory, led by Carmen Calvo.
